FEELS LIKE HOME

Erik Christensen had a goal and assist during Pittsburgh's three-goal second period as the Penguins won for the fifth straight time in New Jersey, 4-2 Tuesday night.

WAKING UP

Ottawa won for just the third time in eight games and extended the Islanders' home winless streak to five games (0-4-1) with a 5-2 victory Tuesday night. It is New York's longest slump at home since losing seven straight from Feb. 27 to March 29, 2001.

FRIENDLY FOE

Jason Pominville had a goal and two assists as Buffalo beat the Lightning for the ninth time in 10 games and sixth straight time in Tampa, 4-2 Tuesday night. The Sabres had lost 12 of 15 entering the game.

STANDINGS

Cam Ward made 34 saves as Southeast Division-leading Carolina won its third in four games, 3-1 over the Rangers on Tuesday night. Even with the loss, New York, last in the Atlantic Division, has as many points as the Hurricanes (54).

TUNING IN

Ratings for the NHL All-Star game increased from last year. Sunday's game on Versus drew a .8 rating, up 14 percent from the .7 last season, totaling 796,717 viewers.

SIDELINED

Vancouver defenseman Willie Mitchell is out indefinitely with a broken vertebra in his back. Mitchell, who played with the injury for nine games before sitting out, has skated on his own the last two days and could return during an upcoming four-game road trip.

SPEAKING

''I think it was the worst call I've ever seen, to tell you the truth. I know he's coming out. I stop and try not to hit him and he pretty much charged me, and I fell on him. I didn't even try to punch him and he started to punch me with his blocker.'' - Nashville's J.P. Dumont on a goalie interference call in a 3-1 loss to the Bruins on Tuesday night.

Oddsmakers keep Flames a longshot bet

The Calgary Flames are playing far better now than they were earlier in the season, but in the eyes of the Las Vegas oddsmakers they still only have a dim chance of winning the Stanley Cup.

That's what one learns when a low-roller spends the weekend before Super Bowl in Sin City before the high-rolling revellers arrive for the Super parties.

It's unlikely these well-heeled party-goers and big spenders will take their eyes away from the many Super Bowl parlays to even glance at the NHL's betting line on the Stanley Cup.

If they did, they'd notice the Flames started the season a 20-1 choice to win the big prize. Currently, Mike Keenan's crew is on the boards at 18-1.

The weekend before Super Bowl, Vegas is supposedly quiet. Seemed like a good place to relax before getting back to work for the Flames final 32 games in 67 days starting tonight.

But last weekend wasn't dull in the other city that never sleeps. There was golf in the desert sun and wind, and I watched from a block-and-a-half away as fire gutted the top facade and upper rooms of the Monte Carlo Resort and Casino.

I saw a Brad Paisley concert. I got tips on how to be successful at Poker for the Flames annual charity poker event night tomorrow. And since hockey is never far from my thoughts, I watched the East Coast Hockey League's Las Vegas Wranglers -- a Flames farm team -- before checking the hockey odds for fun in the sports books at Mandalay Bay.

This not the type of Las Vegas my Fan 960 cohort Mike Richards would experience, nor the late, great, local broadcaster and Sun columnist Eric Bishop.

The hockey odds produced some interesting notes when comparing the columns with the season-opening odds and current ones.

The oddsmakers seem to feel the Colorado Avalanche are a better team without Joe Sakic, Ryan Smyth and Paul Stastny. When the Avs three best players were healthy at the season's outset the team was a 25-1 choice for the Cup. Now, with all three sidelined, the Avs odds are 10-1. That's a better chance to win than the Vancouver Canucks, Dallas Stars and the Flames.

The Detroit Red Wings might have the best record in the NHL by a healthy margin. In Vegas, they are listed at 9-2. The Ottawa Senators are at 5-1 with the defending champion Anaheim Ducks 7-1.

It would appear the odds were set at the start of this campaign based on last season's play. How else do you explain the Nashville Predators?

They started at 13-1 despite losing key players Paul Kariya, Kimmo Timonen, Scott Hartnell, Peter Forsberg and goaltender Tomas Vokoun. Now, recognizing the departure of these stars, the Preds are longshots at 60-1.

The Buffalo Sabres didn't fall nearly as far on the current odds board despite being 12th in the Eastern Conference prior to last night. The Sabres with Daniel Briere and Chris Drury went to the Eastern final last spring, and in the fall were 7-1 odds for the Cup. Presently they are 15-1.

The reverse is reflected for the Philadelphia Flyers. NHL doormats in 2006-07, the Flyers opened at 85-1. Now they are 10-1, the same as tonight's Flames opponent, the San Jose Sharks.

The longest shots are the Los Angeles Kings and Washington Capitals, both at 125-1. At the outset, Wayne Gretzky's Phoenix Coyotes were at the bottom of the board at 125-1. They are now 80-1.

In the name of Rick Tocchett, no hockey wagers were placed. These numbers are here only as a service. It would be less expensive and less time consuming to go online to get the odds, but it wouldn't be nearly as much fun.
