Re: Hockey Today - Jan. 19

Pens lose Crosby in loss to Lightning

Mellon Arena had not gone as silent since Sidney Crosby was wrapping his junior hockey career with Rimouski.

That was 2004, and the Penguins were not very good.

They entered Friday as the NHL's hottest team, but could cool considerably in the wake of losing Crosby, their captain and leading scorer, with a high right ankle sprain.

To the shock of a sellout crowd, Crosby needed assistance to the dressing room after leaving a 3-0 loss to Tampa Bay at 7:37 of the first period. He was injured as his right skate turned outward against the boards behind the Lightning goal after he fell to the ice following a slash from Tampa Bay defenseman Paul Ranger.

Crosby was diagnosed with the dreaded high ankle sprain -- an injury that previously forced forward Maxime Talbot to miss more than a month and has cost goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury the past six weeks.

"He can expect frustration," Talbot said of Crosby, who was not available for comment. "Some days you wake up and it feels good, others it hurts. It is a bad injury because you can do as much rehab as you want, but you just have to wait.

"There is no miracle cure for this injury."

The Penguins are unsure how much time Crosby will miss. He is scheduled for additional evaluation by team doctors in Pittsburgh today.

Crosby was slated to start for the Eastern Conference at the All-Star Game in Atlanta next Sunday. He was the leading vote-getter, but is almost certain to miss the game.

"Obviously, it is a huge loss," coach Michel Therrien said. "There is not a team that can afford to lose the best player in the league. We are facing adversity and we are going to have to battle through."

Crosby has missed only four games since his NHL debut. The Penguins are 0-2-2 in those contests.

Crosby has never missed an extended period of time since joining the Penguins as the highly touted first overall pick in the 2005 entry draft. He missed one game with the flu as a rookie and three due to a groin injury last season.

The Penguins were 18-5-1 since Nov. 21 before their loss to Tampa Bay. They were fifth in the Eastern Conference with 55 points.

They still control their playoff fate. However, returning to the postseason will prove a challenge without Crosby, the reigning league MVP and scoring champion who was tied for the league lead with 63 points.

Crosby had recorded 20 points over his previous 12 games, and the Penguins were 10-1-1 during that span.

"He is a huge part of this team, and that is how we have to respond -- as a team," defenseman Sergei Gonchar said. "We have to focus on playing 60 minutes of smart hockey."

The Penguins did not manage that goal last night.

They trailed Tampa, 1-0, at the time of the injury to Crosby. Tampa Bay right wing Kyle Wanvig scored his first goal at 4:34.

The Lightning entered the first intermission with a 2-0 advantage thanks to center Chris Gratton's seventh goal at 10:51.

Tampa Bay right wing Andre Roy, a former Penguin, assisted on those goals and scored his fourth at 5:32 of the third period to wrap the game.

Goaltender Ty Conklin lost in regulation for the first time this season, falling to 10-1-1. He allowed three goals for the first time in eight games and for only the third start this season.

The Penguins, 26-17-3, had a six-game home win streak snapped.
