Appendectomy sidelines Stastny

Paul Stastny practiced Thursday with his Avalanche teammates, another seemingly routine day for the young all-star center. But not long after practice was over, Stastny was rushed to a hospital for emergency surgery to remove his appendix and will be out for two to three weeks.

It has been that kind of season for the Avalanche.

"Paul experienced some pain in his abdominal area today," Avs trainer Matt Sokolowski said. "Further examination by our medical staff following practice determined he needed the procedure. We expect him to make a full recovery."

The Avs recalled rookie T.J. Hensick from Lake Erie of the American Hockey League to fill in for Stastny.

It is the latest injury blow to a team already without Joe Sakic
Colorado Avalanche

and Ryan Smyth. Stastny was the team's first-line center and was starting to get his production going after a recent slump.

He will miss the All-Star Game in Atlanta. Another Avs player must be selected for the game. The leading candidate is winger Marek Svatos.

Oilers add Greene, put Sanderson on IR
January 17, 2008

Canadian Press

EDMONTON -- The Edmonton Oilers activated defenseman Matt Greene from injured reserve and assigned him to AHL Springfield on a conditioning assignment.

The Oilers also placed veteran winger Geoff Sanderson on injured reserve with a back injury.

Greene missed the Oilers' past 34 games with a broken fibula and ligament damage in his left ankle in an Oct. 30 game versus the Detroit Red wings. He has one assist and 11 penalty minutes in 13 games this season.

Sanderson has missed 12 of the past 13 games.
