Re: Hockey Today - Jan. 17

Hockey Today

SCOREBOARD Thursday, Jan. 17

Dallas at San Jose (10:30 p.m. EST). The Sharks have a two-point lead over the Stars for first place in the Pacific Division.

STARS Wednesday

-Patrick Kane, Blackhawks, had two goals and an assist in Chicago's 6-1 win over St. Louis.

-Daniel Briere, Flyers, scored twice and Philadelphia Flyers held off Florida 5-3.

-Rick DiPietro, and Bill Guerin, Islanders. DiPietro had 37 saves and Guerin scored two goals to lead New York to a 3-1 victory over New Jersey.

STUCK ON 499

Daniel Briere scored twice and Kimmo Timonen had a goal and two assists and Philadelphia held off Florida 5-3 on Wednesday night, denying Panthers coach Jacques Martin his 500th win. Martin, looking to become the 10th coach in NHL history to win 500 games, won No. 499 on Jan. 10 at Atlanta, but Florida has lost three straight since. The Panthers have dropped five of six.

GOING WILD

Jarome Iginla scored the winning goal in the shootout, lifting Calgary to a 3-2 victory over Minnesota on Wednesday night. Iginla entered with 41 points in 38 career games against Minnesota, and his 24 goals against the Wild are 10 more than the next closest opponent. The Wild held him in check for the first 65 minutes before Iginla beat Niklas Backstrom with a nifty backhander to win it. The Flames won for the first time in five games.

SLUMPING

Petr Prucha and Brandon Dubinsky each had a goal and an assist to lift the Rangers to a 2-1 victory Wednesday night that stretched Buffalo's losing streak to 10 games. Buffalo snapped its run of three straight shootout losses. The Sabres haven't come out on top since a 6-5 shootout victory at Philadelphia on Dec. 22 (0-5-5).

INJURED

St. Louis goalie Manny Legace left in the first period of the Blues' game against the Chicago Blackhawks with an injured right arm. Legace, named to the Western Conference All-Star team last week, was injured with 4:38 left in the first. Chicago's Patrick Sharp drove to the net, but was muscled down by St. Louis' Barret Jackman. Sharp then barreled over Legace's right pad and flew headfirst into the net. The Blues lost to Chicago 6-1.

RECALLED

The Boston Bruins recalled American Hockey League goal-scoring leader Pascal Pelletier from Providence on Wednesday. Pelletier, who leads the AHL with 24 goals, also has 24 assists in 40 games for Providence this season. He was signed by Boston as a free agent in 2006.

SURGERY

Sharks defenseman Kyle McLaren underwent minor arthroscopic surgery this week on his injured left knee. McLaren, placed on injured reserve Sunday, won't return to San Jose's lineup until next week at the earliest. He missed most of the Sharks' practices over the last three weeks while resting in an effort to avoid Monday's cleanup surgery, which the defenseman also underwent last season.

SPEAKING

''It doesn't take a rocket scientist, does it? They are playing well against us. They are playing well against Philly and us. Those are big points to lose.'' - New Jersey forward Patrik Elias after the Devils 3-1 loss to the Islanders on Wednesday night. The Islanders have won six straight overall against the Devils, including all five meetings this season.

Hurricanes trade RW Craig Adams to Chicago, activate 3 from IR
January 17, 2008

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -The Carolina Hurricanes traded right wing Craig Adams to the Chicago Blackhawks for future considerations and activated three players from injured reserve Thursday.

Adams, who had been with the Hurricanes since 2000, had two goals and three assists this season.

Picked in the ninth round in 1996 by the franchise then known as the Hartford Whalers, Adams played 427 games in seven seasons with Carolina, third-most since the team moved to North Carolina in 1997.

The Hurricanes also activated center Matt Cullen, right wing Scott Walker and defenseman Bret Hedican from IR, and all were available to play Thursday night at Ottawa.

Cullen missed seven games with a concussion after he was hit by the New York Rangers' Colton Orr on Dec. 26. Walker missed six games with a knee injury and Hedican missed nine games with a sprained right knee.

Calgary Flames sign goalie Curtis Joseph.
January 17, 2008

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) -Goalie Curtis Joseph signed a $1.5 million, one-year contract with the Calgary Flames on Thursday.

The 40-year-old goaltender agreed to terms Monday, but the Flames waited until Joseph passed a physical before making the announcement. He'll earn about $650,000 this year.

Joseph is one NHL victory shy of tying Terry Sawchuk for fourth all-time on the goalie career win list at 447. He went 18-31-2 with a 3.19 goals-against average and .893 save percentage with the Phoenix Coyotes last season.

He's 446-341-95 in NHL regular-season games with St. Louis, Edmonton, Toronto, Detroit and Phoenix.

Joseph will relieve goalie Miikka Kiprusoff, who has started 47 of 48 games.

The Flames sent rookie backup goalie Curtis McElhinney (0-2-0) to the AHL's Quad City Flames on Thursday.
