Re: Hockey Today - Jan. 13

On the Ice - Sunday
By Judd Hall

Sunday’s are normally light on games as far as the NHL is concerned. That won’t be the case this time around as we’ve got eight matches on the card, giving us plenty of chances to fatten our bankroll.

Let’s take a look around the league for any trends for Sunday.

Philadelphia at Washington

The Capitals are entering this tilt having won four of their past five games on the schedule. Washington’s most recent conquest was a 2-1 victory over the Avalanche on Jan. 9. It was the Caps’ first win over a Western Conference foe this season. The ‘over’ has gone 4-2 in their last six contests.

Philadelphia is coming off of a Saturday afternoon home match against the Bruins, which they lost 4-3 in overtime. That may be a lousy loss to some, but the Flyers were down 3-1 at the midway point of the third period.

The Flyers have been great on the road recently, posting a 5-1 record away from home in their last six games. They also saw the ‘under’ go 4-1-1 during that stretch.

Washington is 4-4 when playing on three days rest, but just 2-1 when following up a win. Philly is 4-3-1 when playing on no rest, going 3-2-1 after a defeat.

Phoenix at Minnesota

Phoenix is on an unbelievable tear right now as evidenced by winning six of its last seven contests this year and eight of its previous 10 road tilts. The majority of those games were high scoring, seeing the ‘over’ go 5-1-1. The most recent win for the Coyotes came at Vancouver, where they won 4-3 on Jan. 11.

The Wild have come up with a pair of nice road wins recently, a 6-5 shoot out win at Detroit on the 10th and a 5-2 trouncing of Chicago on the 11th the ‘over’ hitting on both nights. Despite its victories, Minnesota is barely above .500 on the road at 11-10-2 this season. However, the Wild are 14-7 at the Xcel Energy Center this year with the ‘over’ going 3-0-3 in their last six matches at home.

Minnesota is a better team after having a day off, posting a 9-9-1 record as opposed to Phoenix’s 9-11-1 mark.

The Coyotes have lost their past four games in Minnesota by a combined score of 13-5.

Vancouver at St. Louis

Perhaps all the Blues need right now is home cooking. St. Louis has dropped two of its last three games away from the Scottrade Center with the ‘over’ going 2-1 in that span. They’ve won their last three home fixtures by a combined score of 11-3. St. Louis’s most recent game was a 6-4 road defeat at the hands of the Blue Jackets on Jan. 11.

Vancouver is reeling right now after falling to the Coyotes at home, 4-3, on Jan. 11. Before that, the Canucks fell at San Jose, 3-1, on Jan. 10. The loss to the Sharks is far worse when considering they own the worst home record of any team in the NHL. Vancouver has seen the ‘under’ go 5-2-1in their past eight games.

Both clubs are coming into this tilt with a day off, but the Canucks own a slight advantage when coming off a loss. Vancouver is 7-2-1 when getting a day of rest after losing, while the Blues are just 5-2-1 in the same situation this season.

Calgary at Edmonton

The Flames have dropped two consecutive home games to squads with lesser records. Luckily for them, the road is calling. Calgary has been the consummate road warrior recently, going 8-1 away from the Pengrowth Saddledome since Dec. 9. They also have seen the ‘over’ go 5-2-2 during that time frame. The Flames have posted a decent 14-8-5 mark when playing on a day of rest and 6-5-3 when coming off of a defeat.

The Oilers have been fantastic at home recently, winning their last three home tilts by a 12-4 margin. Edmonton is just 3-4-2 when playing after two days rest, but are 1-0-1 when coming off of a win. The ‘over’ has gone 6-3 in that stretch.

Calgary has won its past three road games against the Oilers with the ‘under’ going 2-1.

Colorado at Florida

The Avalanche are coming into this match after flying down from Raleigh after beating the Hurricanes 5-4 on Saturday night. Colorado has posted a 3-2 record this year when playing with no time off between games with the ‘under’ going 3-2.

Florida is also heading into this inter-conference showdown after a road tilt with the Lightning. The Panthers are not much better than the Avs when it comes to playing on consecutive nights with a 3-4-1 mark. The ‘over’ is 4-3 in this spot.

Colorado has lost four straight matches away from home with the ‘under’ going 3-1 in that stretch. The Panthers are playing the same at home, losing four straight while the ‘under’ going 3-1.

The Avs have won their last four appearances in South Florida, watching the ‘over’ go 3-1 in those matches.

New York Islanders at Ottawa

The Senators have been riding high once more, winning four consecutive games. That streak includes a home-and-home sweep of a downtrodden Buffalo squad and a quality 3-2 win at home against Detroit on Saturday night. That has improved Ottawa’s home record to 4-1 in its last five engagements, while the ‘over’ is 3-2. The Sens have not lost back-to-back home games to Eastern Conference foes since the end of November.

Ottawa is 7-2-1 this year when playing on no rest, with the ‘over’ going 6-4.

New York recently snapped a four-game losing skid by beating the Flames on the road, 5-4, on Jan. 11. It was the first road win for the Islanders since a 4-1 win at Carolina on Dec. 31. The Isles have seen the ‘over’ go 5-3 in their last eight road tests.

The Islanders are 7-10-3 in the 2007-2008 season when taking a day off. And are 3-4-1 when following it up after a win.

The Sens have won their past five contests against the Isles at Scotiabank Place. The ‘over’ went 3-2 in those five meetings.

San Jose at Anaheim

The Ducks are on a five game home winning streak right now, seeing the ‘under’ go 4-1. Anaheim’s most recent victory coming in the form of a 5-0 shutout of the Maple Leafs on Jan. 9 at the Honda Center. It’s the Ducks third straight home win over Eastern Conference opponents this year.

Anaheim has posted a 4-3 mark when playing with more than three days off, going 2-2 after a win.

San Jose has been on a roll as of late, going 6-0-1 in its last seven games. That includes a sweep of a four-game road set for the Sharks. During this stretch, the ‘under’ went 3-1-3. San Jose beat the Canucks at home, 3-1, on Jan. 10.

The Sharks are 6-2 when coming off of no rest this year with the ‘under’ going 5-3.

San Jose is the NHL’s best road team, going 16-3-2 this year away from the HP Pavilion. That has translated into success at Anaheim, where the Sharks have gone 3-1-1 in their last five trips to Orange County.

Chicago at Nashville

The Blackhawks have plunged far into the abyss after starting the season so strong, losing their last eight games by an average margin of 2.4 goals per game. The ‘under’ has gone 3-2 in their past five outings. Chicago’s most recent loss was a 5-2 decision versus the Wild in which they out shot (43-16) and won the face-off battle (41-24) on Jan. 11.

Nashville has gone 4-2 in its last six games, while seeing the totals split at 3-3. The Preds have went 5-4 at home in their last nine dates with the ‘over’ going 6-2-1. The Predators have not lost to a Central Division foes in the Sommet Center since Dec. 10 when they fell to Detroit, 2-1.

The Preds have a 4-2 record when playing on back-to-back evenings, with the ‘over’ posting the same number.

Chicago has gone 7-8-1 when playing on a night’s rest, while the ‘under’ has went 7-3.

The Predators have gone 2-0-1 at home against Chicago in their last three meetings, while the combined score went above the closing total twice.
