Re: Hockey Today - Jan. 11

Surgery for M. Johnson

Blues forward Mike Johnson has a torn labrum in his left shoulder and will require season-ending surgery. Johnson was scratched the past two games, but he had been practicing with the team.

"He was able to keep playing, and it just wasn't getting any better," Blues coach Andy Murray said. "They did some other tests and that's what they determined."

Johnson, who signed a one-year contract at the start of the season, had two goals and five points in 21 games for the Blues.

"He's a solid veteran player that is very professional in the way that he handled himself," Murray said. "He had the ability to play in a lot of different roles on our team, so we'll miss his versatility."

Murray said the Blues had no plans to call up a forward Thursday from Peoria. "I think when we go on an extended road trip, we'll need to have an extra body," he said. "I think it depends what we need ... the type of player that we need."
