Re: Hockey Today - Jan. 10

On the Ice - Thursday
By Judd Hall

If you’re looking for a hockey fix, then Thursday night is for you. There are 11 games set to go down in the NHL that night, nine of which are between teams that are vying for playoff positioning.

Plenty of action to cover…let’s get to it.

Florida at Atlanta

The Panthers are banged up right now with five skaters on injured reserve, three of them defensemen. It has showed on the scoreboard as Florida has lost five of its last six games. Atlanta has alternated wins and losses since Dec. 29. The Thrashers have seen the ‘over’ go 5-2 in their last seven tilts.

The Thrashers have gone 4-1 versus Florida at home in their last five meetings with the ‘under’ going 4-1 in that time. Florida has seen the ‘under’ go 14-6 in its last 20 games where it’s had a day off between contests.

Philadelphia at New York Rangers

The Flyers are feeling good about themselves right now winning five of their last six games to pull closer in the Atlantic Division. Philly has seen the ‘under’ go on a four-game streak right now. Things aren’t going that well for the Blueshirts, losing four straight games while out shooting their opponents in each game.

New York hasn’t lost consecutive tilts at home since the beginning of December. Philadelphia hasn’t won consecutive games against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden since March 2006.

New Jersey at Carolina

The Devils are as strong as ever by posting a 6-2 mark in their last eight games. The ‘under’ is 5-2-1 during that span for New Jersey. Carolina is coming back home after winning two of their last three games on the road. However, the ‘Canes have lost their last two matches at home to inferior opponents by giving up nine goals.

Carolina has lost its last two regular season meetings with the Devils, seeing the ‘under’ hit both times. New Jersey is 10-8-2 when getting a day off, with the ‘under’ going 13-4.

Montreal at Boston

The Bruins are coming into this game after dropping a 1-0 match at home to Carolina on Jan. 8. It was their first loss at home since Dec. 22. This could bode well for the bettors out there as Boston is 11-6-2 when playing with a day of rest. And 7-1-1 when that contest comes after a defeat.

Montreal is heading to Beantown after claiming a 4-3 overtime win at home against the Blackhawks on Tuesday. The Habs are 9-6-3 when playing right after a travel day, but just 2-5-3 when following a win. The ‘under’ is 10-7 during that time frame.

Boston has lost its last three home games versus the Canadiens, seeing the ‘over’ cash tickets on two occasions.

Buffalo at Ottawa

The Senators have enjoyed a nice four day break after beating Tampa Bay at home, 4-3, in overtime on Jan. 5. That time off normally helps Ottawa in its next game as its 6-0-1 when getting at least three days off. And the Sens are 5-0 when following up a victory.

Buffalo, on the other hand, is a polar opposite. The Sabres are mired in a seven-game losing skid. Buffalo is also having difficulty against the Senators as evidenced by its 1-3 head-to-head record this season. Lindy Ruff’s crew has been alright when playing after a day off, going 10-4-2 on one day of rest.

Pittsburgh at Tampa Bay

The Lightning finally got of the schneid by beating the Blueshirts, 5-3, on the road to snap a seven-game losing streak. The ‘over’ has been a solid play for Tampa Bay, going 5-2-1 since Dec. 22.

Times are good in Pittsburgh right now…of course, winning seven straight will make anyone happy. Of course, you should win that many games in a row if you outscore your opponents 24-9 in that streak.

Tampa Bay has won five straight home tilts against the Penguins, seeing the ‘under’ go 4-1 in those games. The ‘Ning have a lowly 8-12-3 record with a day of rest, but are 4-2-2 when coming after a victory. The Pens are 12-7-2 when playing with one day off, posting a 6-3-1 mark when following up a win.

Minnesota at Detroit

The Wings keep rolling, winning four straight and eight of their last nine tilts. More impressive is the fact they’re offense is making it happen by scoring at least three goals in seven of those contests. Detroit is 19-14-1 when getting a day off between fixtures, going 14-3 when following up a victory.

Minnesota has lost three of its past four games with the ‘under’ going 2-1-1. The Wild aren’t much better when have a couple of days rest, posting a 4-5 mark in that situation for the season.

Detroit has not lost to the Wild at Joe Louis Arena since Jan. 2006.

Dallas at St. Louis

The Stars finally snapped their four-game skid by taking Minnesota to task by winning 3-1 on Jan. 7 in Dallas. The ‘under’ is 3-1-1 for Dallas in its last five matches. The Stars are playing on Wednesday night, so you’ll need to know their record on back-to-back games. They’re 3-3-1 overall, but are 2-1-1 following a loss.

The Blues absolutely manhandled Columbus at home on Tuesday, winning 6-1. St. Louis has now won two straight games at home after dropping four in a row dating back to Dec. 23. The Blues have posted a nice 9-6-3 mark on games following a day off, but just 4-4-2 after a victory.

St. Louis has won its last three meetings with the Stars at home, with the ‘over’ going 2-1.

Phoenix at Edmonton

The Coyotes are one of the league’s hottest clubs right now, winners of five straight matches and posting a very impressive 7-1 road record since Dec. 8. Their most recent road triumph was a 3-1 decision in Calgary on Tuesday. During this eight-game road run, Phoenix has seen the ‘over’ go 3-2-3.

Edmonton isn’t floundering right now by winning three of its last four games, including a 4-0 win over the Islanders on Jan. 7. The Oilers have now won two consecutive home contests after dropping three in a row last month.

Phoenix is 9-10-1 this year when playing on just one day of rest, with the ‘under’ posting a 9-7 mark. The Oilers, meanwhile, are 2-4-2 when having two days off with the ‘over’ going 5-3.

The home team hasn’t fared well in the recent history of these two clubs. The road side has gone 3-0 since Dec. 2006 with the ‘under’ recording a 2-1 mark.

Vancouver at San Jose

The Canucks are currently on a 4-1 mark, which includes a 3-2 shoot out win over the Islanders at home on Jan. 8. During this run, Vancouver has watched the ‘under’ go 3-2. The Canucks are now heading out onto the road where they have gone 2-4-1 in their last seven matches away from General Motors Place.

San Jose has also been playing some solid hockey, going 5-0-1 in its past six contests with the ‘under’ going 2-1-3 during that span. Unfortunately for the Sharks they’re playing this game at home where they’ve gone 1-3-1 in their last five at the HP Pavilion. Maybe that should be expected from a team with the worst home record in the NHL, which currently sits at 7-9-4.

In spite of the poor home mark, the Sharks have fared well over Vancouver by winning all three meetings while seeing the ‘over’ go 2-1 in head-to-head matches this season.

Sabres D Numminen likely out for season
January 9, 2008

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -Sabres defenseman Teppo Numminen's season is likely over after finding out he'll need an additional two months to recover after having open-heart surgery to repair a faulty valve.

Stressing that his heart is fine, Numminen told The Associated Press on Wednesday that doctors said he'll require additional time off to allow his sternum to heal. Numminen learned the news Tuesday after Sabres doctors consulted with doctors at the Cleveland Clinic, where the player had the operation in September.

The news came as a shock to Numminen, who spent the past month practicing with the team and was preparing to return to action within one or two weeks.

``It's always disappointing. Things were going really well, I was getting into good shape and your mind to a point where you'll be playing again,'' Numminen said. ``Now you're just kind of floating and floating and wondering what happened and where to go from here.''

The new prognosis came after doctors studied the player's latest test results after Numminen went to Cleveland for a checkup last week. Doctors ruled Numminen should be out for six months after surgery before being cleared for contact.

That timetable means Numminen wouldn't be able to return until mid-March at the earliest. Barring playoffs, the Sabres close the regular season at Boston on April 5.

Acknowledging that he might not play this season, the 39-year-old said he is still open to playing next year.

The operation was required after a problem was discovered during a routine checkup before Numminen was preparing to report to training camp for his 19th NHL season, and third with Buffalo.

The Finnish player has had a heart murmur since childhood and was diagnosed with a dilated aorta in March 2004, when he was playing for the Dallas Stars. Numminen missed five games because of the condition before he was cleared to play.

The condition also forced him to miss one game and part of another during a playoff series against Philadelphia in 2006.

Gagne to return tonight against the Rangers

The feeling of a class reunion permeated the Flyers' practice rink yesterday as some players on the mend took part in practice with the intent of playing against the New York Rangers tonight at Madison Square Garden, and most of the scrutiny centered on the big man on campus, Simon Gagne.

Gagne, the star winger who averaged 44 goals the last two seasons, is expected to make his long-awaited return after missing two months recovering from a concussion and a neck injury.

"I felt good on the ice, and I'm looking forward to playing in New York," Gagne said after practice.

Meanwhile, Antero Niittymaki will look forward to starting his third straight game in goal for the Flyers.

Gagne's return will be especially welcomed by the Flyers, who have won five of their last six games to inch their way up the tangled Eastern Conference standings. They will be missing Joffrey Lupul, who suffered a concussion and a bruised spinal cord when teammate Derian Hatcher plowed into him during Saturday's game in Toronto. Lupul has 16 goals, tied for second on the team.

Gagne has missed 28 games this season and has not played since Nov. 7. Coach John Stevens, who played Gagne on a line with Danny Briere and R.J. Umberger during practice, said Gagne probably would not see the number of minutes he typically gets, but would log time on the power play.

"I do think he can step in and play a lot of situations," Stevens said. "Obviously, he's a power-play guy. He'll see some significant time right away."

Given their history of concussions to star players, the Flyers will no doubt monitor Gagne closely. Keith Primeau's career ended prematurely because of concussions, and a series of concussions is believed to be a major reason Eric Lindros' career was compromised. And in the dog-eat-dog world of the NHL, it won't be surprising if the Rangers target Gagne with some physical play. He said he was prepared to take some hits.

"I know what I'm going to face tomorrow and I'm ready for it," Gagne said. "I'm not ready only for them, I'm ready for every team now. That's the way I have to go - not being scared to get hit. You have to go out there and play your game."

Gagne said he would not wear a neck brace he had used during some practices because he doesn't feel comfortable with it.

Nitty in the net. After his superb play in recent wins over Toronto and Atlanta, Niittymaki has earned a third consecutive start tonight. In those two games, Niittymaki faced 84 shots but allowed only three goals.

"He's as sharp as I've ever seen him, and he's worked hard and patiently to get back into the net," Stevens said. "And it's my job as a coach to reward a player when he excels. Marty [Biron] will get back in this weekend. It's just a matter of riding the hot horse right now."

The Flyers acquired Biron to be their No. 1 goalie after Niittymaki struggled last season, when he tried to play through the limitations caused by a hip injury that was surgically repaired during the off-season.

"It was tough" last year, said Niittymaki, who opted for a series of cortisone injections rather than surgery last season. "But I don't regret it. It was my chance to be the No. 1 guy, and I wanted to play through it. It didn't work out so well. Now, my whole body feels better. I knew I wasn't as bad as I was last year."

Loose pucks. Winger Sami Kapanen is expected to be back in action tonight. He missed Tuesday's game in Atlanta after dental surgery made necessary when a puck hit him in the mouth Saturday in Toronto. Kapanen will wear a full face shield. . . . Captain Jason Smith skated yesterday and said his availability for tonight would depend on how he feels during today's pregame skate. Smith has been out since Dec. 29 with a leg-muscle injury. "If everything continues the way it is, it's time to be out there," Smith said. "As of now, things have gotten a lot better the last couple of days. Things are circulating and pumping the way they're supposed to." . . . Winger Scottie Upshall, out since Dec. 29 with a sprained right ankle, said he was good to go. Whether he plays is up to Stevens. . . . The Flyers are 1-1 against the Rangers.
