Hockey Today - Jan. 5

Hockey Today - Jan. 5

No Rest for the Weary
By Judd Hall

There are just four games on the slate Friday…nothing unusual for the NHL. What is interesting is those games can and will directly effect five matches in a jam packed Saturday for puck heads. What that means is we’re going to see five clubs going out on back-to-back nights trying to come out on the right side of the ledger.

So the question becomes what plays to make on these games? Let’s take a look, shall we?

Trouble in the Nation’s Capital…

After starting the season on one of the hottest streaks I’ve ever seen, the Senators cooled off for a time there in November before rebounding last month. Now Ottawa (20-10-4 straight up, ‘over’ 21-16-2) is reeling from a home-and-home sweep at the hands of the Capitals of all teams.

Ottawa welcomes the Lightning to town on Saturday after making a quick run through Western New York to face the Sabres. The trends are favorable to play the Sens on Saturday since they’re 6-2-1 SU when playing on no days rest with the ‘over’ going 5-4 in that stretch.

The Sens are almost automatic when coming off of a win the following night, going 4-1. They’re decent coming off a loss right now as well with a 2-1-1 mark this year.

Of course, you’re going to be backing a huge favorite…minus 240 at last glance. But you also must take into account that Tampa Bay (15-22-4 SU, ‘over’ 22-16-2) has dropped six consecutive contests.

The Bullies are Back…

The standings don’t show it, but the rough and tumble image of the Flyers has returned…much to the delight of their fans. Philadelphia (19-14-4 SU, ‘under’ 19-15-2) has won three straight matches, including two on that dreaded “Sunshine Swing.” Now Philly makes the trip north of the border to square off with the Maple Leafs.

Traveling to Toronto (16-17-8 SU, ‘over’ 20-16-4) hasn’t been good to the Flyers recently as they have a losing record at the Air Canada Centre (2-3). That could normally mean a fade in this situation, but you’d be wrong.

Philly isn’t strong one way or the other when playing on no rest with a 3-3-1 record this year. Luckily for them, the Leafs are like stink on ice at the present, losing four of their last five games by a combined score of 23-11.

Devilish in Beantown…

This might be the easiest win on the board, in my opinion. New Jersey (22-14-3 SU, ‘under’ 20-11-7) has won four of its past five games and get to make a run up to Boston (20-16-4 SU, ‘under’ 23-14-2) for a clash with the Bruins.

The B’s are a bit banged up right now, with defenseman Aaron Ward and winger Glen Murray both living the good life on injured reserve. They’ve found their winning ways recently in spite of those setbacks, finding themselves on the right of the ledger the past two games.

Unfortunately for Boston, all good things must come to an end. Blame the Devils for that though as they’re 8-2 in their last 10 meetings against the Bruins.

You’d be wise to parlay New Jersey with the ‘under’ here as three of the past four tilts between these rivals.

Fading ‘Canes…

How Carolina (20-18-4 SU, ‘over’ 21-16-4) stays in first place of the Southeast Division is beyond me. The Hurricanes have lost three straight fixtures, scoring just one goal in two of those meetings.

Things aren’t destined to be sour for the ‘Canes on Saturday when they face St. Louis (19-14-5 SU, ‘under’ 19-11-7). The Blues have gone 7-3 in their last 10 meetings with Carolina with the ‘under’ going 6-4.

The Hurricanes are 3-5-1 when playing on consecutive nights. However, watch Carolina closely on Friday, especially if they lose. They ‘Canes have gone 11-10 following up a loss, but are an impressive 8-0 on the road in this situation in 2007-2008.

Duck Ugly…

Anaheim (20-17-5, ‘over’ 20-14-5) is beginning to get its swagger back, winning five of its last seven games. The Ducks will most likely take the young Blackhawks to task on Friday as well to improve that record. Then they’ll make it out to Phoenix (20-18-1 SU, ‘over’ 17-16-5) on Saturday for another easy win, right?

The Coyotes are not a good team by any stretch of the imagination no matter what their record is currently. But they’ve got Anaheim’s number this year, going 2-1-0 at this point of the year. And the Ducks haven’t been great in back-to-back affairs this season as evidenced by their 3-4 record.

Instead of picking a side in this match, take the ‘over’ since all three meetings have been high scoring affairs, averaging at least eight goals per game.
