Rangers recall Dawes and Moore; demote Callahan
ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW YORK -- The Rangers recalled Nigel Dawes and Greg Moore from Hartford of the AHL on Sunday and put both forwards right into the lineup against the Phoenix Coyotes.

New York, which scored only nine goals in losing four of the previous five, benched checking forward Ryan Hollweg and sent struggling second-year player Ryan Callahan down to Hartford.

Dawes and Moore played on a line centered by Chris Drury.

Dawes had four goals and an assist in 16 games earlier this season with the Rangers before being assigned last month to Hartford, where he had nine goals and 18 assists in 14 contests. Moore scored a team-high 15 goals for the Wolf Pack and helped set up 14 others in 26 games.

Moore was pointless in his only game with the Rangers this season, Nov. 21 at Tampa Bay.

Callahan, 22, has a goal and 12 penalty minutes for New York in 15 games, but didn't record a point in the seven since he returned from a knee injury that sidelined him for a month (16 games).

Hollweg has just one assist and 11 penalty minutes in 31 games this season, and is a minus-7. He got only 5 minutes, 49 seconds of ice time on Wednesday in New York's 5-4 overtime loss at Washington.

The Rangers also played without forward Marcel Hossa and No. 1 goalie Henrik Lundqvist, due to the flu. Hossa was scratched from the lineup, while Lundqvist dressed as the backup to Steve Valiquette.

Defenseman Marek Malik returned from a three-game benching to fill in for Jason Strudwick, who moved up from the blue line to play as a forward in place of Hossa.

Leafs' McCabe has hand surgery
December 17th, 2007

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Bryan McCabe underwent successful surgery Monday to repair three broken metacarpals in his left hand. He is expected to be out of the lineup for six to eight weeks.

The injury occurred in Saturday's game when Montreal rookie Sergei Kostitsyn slammed hard into McCabe along the boards. McCabe laid on the ice, grimacing in pain before skating to the locker room, where he was examined by the medical staff.

In 27 games this season, McCabe has registered four goals and 12 points.

In a related roster move, the Maple Leafs recalled defenseman Anton Stralman from the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League. He played in seven games with the Leafs earlier this season without recording a point.

Simon granted time off from Islanders
December 17th, 2007

Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - New York Islanders tough guy Chris Simon was granted time away from the team on Monday after he was involved in another ugly incident this past Saturday.

Simon was assessed a match penalty and a game misconduct for intent to injure when he purposely stepped on the leg of Pittsburgh's Jarkko Ruutu in the third period of New York's 3-2 loss.

"I want to start off by making clear that there is no excuse for my actions on Saturday night and I apologize to everyone involved," Simon said in a statement released by the Islanders on Monday.

"The Islanders and I agree that the right thing to do is for me to take some time away from the team. I have enjoyed a long career achieving my dream of being a player in the National Hockey League and I'm proud of my accomplishments. But I acknowledge that time and assistance is needed before I return to the game.

"I want to thank the Islanders for providing the environment for me to become a better player and person, and our fans for their support along the way."

Simon is expected to meet with NHL vice president Colin Campbell on Tuesday.

The 15-year veteran has a checkered past when it comes to on-ice incidents.

Last March, he was suspended 25 games for a stick-swinging incident against Ryan Hollweg of the Rangers, a penalty that carried into this season. He has also served a total of 15 games for six different suspensions involving incidents such as kneeing, cross-checking, elbowing and slashing.

In his absence, Jean-Sebastien Aubin has posted a 1-5-1 record, and the Kings have won two games. Jonathan Quick won the other game, an 8-2 victory against Buffalo on December 6.
