Thursday Service Picks and Consensus Reports:
Re: Thursday Service Picks and Consensus Reports:
Jimmy The Moose
Both teams are again favorites to come out of the Eastern Conference. The Pistons are 8-3 in their last 11 road games as a favorite. In their last 14 road games as a favorite of -0.5 to -4.5 they are 10-4 at the window. The Heat will be without Wade tonight. In their last 19 games they are 3-14-2 ATS. Miami has owned the Pistons of late but without Wade in the lineup looks for Detroit to win. Play on the Pistons -

Suns tip off the season in Seattle knowing teams in season openers are 33-18 ATS against unrested opponents playing in Game Two of the season. With Seattle returning home after playing in Denver last night, we'll back Phoenix here tonight.

Gold Sheet
*Virginia Tech 19 - GEORGIA TECH 14--Scheduling favors Ga. Tech, which has extra week of prep, while visiting Hokies still trying to figure out how they let No. 2-ranked BC slip off hook. Not enamored of either sputtering offense. But Hokies' mobile true frosh QB T. Taylor (sprained ankle) expected back after sitting out vs. Eagles. And host without star RB Choice (knee). Doubt QB Bennett (only 2 TDP TY) can step up vs. defensively-stout Va. Tech (8-2 last 10 as a dog). CABLE TV--ESPN

Detroit Pistons at Miami Heat (+4 ½, 180 1/2)
The Detroit Pistons and the Miami Heat will renew their Eastern Conference rivalry Thursday in South Beach with some familiar faces missing from both teams’ rosters.
Miami will be without superstar Dwyane Wade until late November after Wade underwent knee and shoulder surgery in the offseason. The Heat will rely on a declining Shaquille O’Neal and newcomer Ricky Davis to carry the scoring load. O’Neal averaged a mediocre 17 points and seven rebounds per game last season.
Detroit parted ways with veteran Chris Webber this offseason after third-year forward Jason Maxiell emerged as a capable low-post reserve. Maxiell averaged five points and three rebounds in limited action last season and will undoubtedly see more playing time this season. The Pistons also moved veteran forward Antonio McDyess into the starting lineup and shifted a slimmer Rasheed Wallace over to the center position.
Miami is counting on erratic point guard Jason Williams to lead the offense again this season after failing to secure a point guard in the offseason. Williams averaged 10 points and 4 assists last season for the Heat.
Pick: Pistons -4 ½
Houston Rockets at Utah Jazz (-4, 191 1/2)
The Jazz have covered the spread in seven of their last 10 meetings with the Houston Rockets, including five consecutive against-the-spread (ATS) wins in their playoff series in May.
Utah hammered Golden State 117-96 as a 1 ½-point road underdog in Oakland on Tuesday. Carlos Boozer led the Jazz with 32 points and 15 rebounds and Deron Williams added 24 points. Despite offseason trade demands, athletic power forward Andrei Kirilenko was stifling on defense, recording five blocks and 10 rebounds.
On the same night, the Rockets came away from the Staples Center with a narrow two-point win over the shorthanded Los Angeles Lakers. Houston struggled to contain Kobe Bryant, who torched the Rockets for 45 points with four steals. Tracy McGrady led Houston with 30 points and Yao Ming added 25 points and 12 rebounds but the Rockets could not maintain a lead against the overmatched Lakers.
The Rockets are 0-5 ATS in their last five meetings in Utah and the Jazz are 8-1-1 ATS in their last 10 overall contests at Energy Solutions Arena.
Pick: Jazz -4
