Re: Wednesday Service Reports:

Covers Experts...2-0 last night

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia at Toronto (-6 ½, 190)

The Raptors finished last season atop the Atlantic Division with a 47-35 straight-up (SU) record. They were also a league-best 48-33-1 against the spread (ATS).

Longtime Raptors forward Morris Petersen’s departure to New Orleans and the subsequent acquisition of Carlos Delfino from the Detroit Pistons were the only big changes to the Raptors’ roster in the offseason. The changes shouldn’t have much of an impact on Toronto’s success this season.

The Raptors were 3-1 SU and 2-2 ATS against the 76ers last season. The Sixers, conversely, were an impressive 43-36-3 ATS and finished the regular season with 35-47 SU after opening the campaign with 22 losses in their first 30 games. They are also 4-0 ATS in their last four contests at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre.

Pick: 76ers + 6 ½

Milwaukee at Orlando (-7 ½, 201)

The Magic spent a lot of money in the offseason to lure Rashard Lewis to Orlando as part of an attempt to overthrow the Miami Heat and conquer the Southeast Division this year.

The Magic were a mediocre 37-43-2 ATS and 40-42 SU overall last season and were 3-1 ATS versus the Bucks. Milwaukee, though, was without Michael Redd in three of its meetings with Orlando. The Bucks’ sharpshooter averaged more than 25 points and shot over 38 percent from the three-point line in 53 contests last season.

Milwaukee will have versatile swingman Desmond Mason and sixth-overall pick Yi Jianlian in its starting lineup Wednesday. These players give the Bucks more options defending against Magic star center Dwight Howard. With a healthy Redd in their lineup and Charlie Villanueva and Bobby Simmons coming off the bench this season, the Bucks’ improvement should be evident.

Pick: Bucks +7 ½

Sacramento at New Orleans (-10, 190 ½)

The bad news is that the Kings will be shorthanded against the Hornets. The good news, for Sacramento backers, is that it probably won’t make a difference.

Sacramento will be without point guard Mike Bibby, forward Ron Artest and rookie center Spencer Hawes. Veteran center Brad Miller is also questionable for Wednesday. The Kings, though, will have leading scorer Kevin Martin in their lineup against the Hornets. Martin averaged more than 20 points with four rebounds and two assists for the Kings last season.

New Orleans’ leading scorer David West will likely miss Wednesday’s opener after spraining his ankle on Friday. West has averaged more than 17 points per game over the last two seasons. His absence virtually eliminates the Hornets’ inside attack that might have proved lethal against the shorthanded Kings.

Pick: Kings +10

Dallas at Cleveland (+4, 185 ½)

Not expecting much scoring in the Mavs-Cavs matchup? Think again.

Last season the Mavericks averaged 100 points per game and allowed their opponents less than 93 points per game. The Cavaliers averaged 97 points per game and also held their opponents to less than 93 points per game last season.

Both teams will be without important defensive players on Wednesday. Cleveland is without workhorse forward Anderson Varejao, who has not been able to work out a contract with the team. The Mavs, similarly, are without starting forward Josh Howard, who is serving a two-game suspension for a preseason altercation with Kings center Brad Miller.

Three-point-a-holic Donyell Marshall will likely see more playing time off the bench for Cleveland, while one-time league scoring leader Jerry Stackhouse will undoubtedly receive more minutes for Dallas.

Pick: Over 185 ½

Toronto Raptors -6.5 (-110)
Wed Oct 31 '07 7:05p
The 2007-08 season tips off for both these Atlantic Division clubs tonight as the 76ers travel north of the border to take on the Toronto Raptors. The Dino’s young talent erupted last season en route to the franchises first ever division championship. A bulk of last year’s squad returns that took three of the four meetings with the Sixers last season. The Sixers are in complete rebuilding mode heading into the upcoming campaign, but they do have some solid pieces in place to help mold the team’s future outlook. However, with Toronto already having a season under its belt during Colangelo’s watch and experiencing immediate success, they’ve raised the bar for ’07. They’ll no longer be able to sneak up on anyone, and they certainly can’t relax against lesser clubs if they expect to outdo their ’06 effort. Philly gave them trouble in their own gym both meetings last year, but the Raptors certainly hold a decided edge in this early match-up considering the Sixers go about six deep right now. Toronto were solid propositions to back in the Air Canada Center last season, so we’ll jump right back on the $$$-train for our first position of the season. Nothing better than getting off on the right foot to start the season; especially against a divisional foe…

Re: Wednesday Service Reports:

Jimmy The Moose

Milwaukee closed out last season playing the over in 6 of their last 8 games. In their last 9 games as a dog the over is 8-1. The Bucks are starting rookie Ri and Desmond Mason also will be a starter for a team that will be much improved. Mix in a health Redd and Mo Williams with Charlie V coming off the bench and you have potential here. The Magic also drastically improved their team with the addition of Lewis and teamed with Howard this team can be very explosive. Look for both teams to open the season with an exciting, high-scoring game. Play the over.

Denver* over Seattle by 21
Two high-echelon scorers like Carmelo Anthony
and Allen Iverson on Denver, and opposing
coach on Seattle says he's starting Earl
Watson because he's a better defender than
Luke Ridnour. All right, then.

Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis used to do most
of the scoring for the Sonics while everyone
stood around and watched. Now they all have
to shoot, and Watson, among others, is a
certified member of the bricklayers union.

With an eye on the home opener tomorrow night
vs. another up-tempo team that is better than
they are -- Phoenix -- watch for Seattle to
be happy with one good half, probably the
first. DENVER, 111-90.
