Re: Friday Service Picks...

Jim Feist

My free pick of the day is the game between (927) LA Angels and (928) OAK Athletics. Take "(928) OAK Athletics". The Angels are slumping, losing 5 of 6. The pitching has really fallen off, allowing 31 runs in 4 straight games. They are also hurting: Gary Matthews Jr., who sat out two weeks this month because of a sprained right ankle, hurt his left knee. Vladimir Guerrero, who was given the previous two games off to recharge, was hit in the left forearm by a Luis Mendoza fastball. Oakland is home and goes with ace Dan Haren (15-. Haren throws great at home with a 2.89, an 8-3 record as opponents hit .235 off him. Play the A's!

Game: Detroit Tigers at Chicago White Sox Sep 28 2007 8:10PM

Prediction: under

Reason: The under is a profitable 13-6 in Detroit's last 19 road games. In their last 10 games vs. a team with a losing record the under is 8-2. The under is 43-18-2 in their last 63 games as a dog of +110 to +150. In Rogers last 12 starts as a dog the under is 7-3-2. The under is 8-3 in Chicago's last 11 games vs. a team with a winning record. In their last 7 games vs. a left-handed starter the under is 5-2. The under is 14-6-1 in Vazquez's last 21 home starts. The team's have played the under in 13 of their last 17 meetings in Chicago. Play the under.

Re: Friday Service Picks...

Matt Rivers comp

For Friday take the Braves in Houston.

Obviously I do not have that much confidence in young Jo Jo Reyes but let's face it, Matt Albers is nothing too special either and all in all the Braves with Chipper, Teixiera, McCann, Francouer and others are the far superior club and are more than worth a go at this price. I do understand that Atlanta was officially eliminated with that loss in Philadelphia last night and therefore may play a few reserves but this Houston team has been awful all season long and is nothing better right now even after some road wins in Cincinnati against the banged up and Double AA quality Reds.

This is far from the lock of my life but to get the Braves in any situation right now against the Astros and not really have to lay anything is of good value. Bobby Cox' squad wins this game a lot more than they don't and I'll therefore take my chances on the visitors

Michael Cannon

15 Dime

ROCKIES (With Webb and Francis as listed pitchers)

Take the Rockies as the home chalk for the win over the Diamondbacks.
Colorado is the hottest team in the majors right now, and they will send a pitcher who has had unbridled success against Arizona to the mound tonight.

Jeff Francis enters tonight’s game on a two-game winning streak. What’s more impressive is his numbers against Arizona. How about a 7-1 mark with a 3.35 ERA in 13 career appearances against the Snakes? Included in that mark is a 1-0 record with a 1.38 ERA in two games this season.

His mound opponent, Brandon Webb, hasn’t been as fortunate against Colorado. The right-hander is 0-3 with a 6.47 ERA in five games against the Rockies this season and just 7-7 with a 3.96 ERA in 20 career outings against them.
Take the Rockies as the home chalk as they keep rolling tonight with the win over the Diamondbacks.

5 Dime

WHITE SOX (With Rogers and Vazquez as listed pitchers)

Take the White Sox as the home chalk tonight over the Tigers.
With Detroit having been eliminated from playoff contention, they now try to focus on playing out the string.

Chicago actually still has something to play for, as they try to stay out of the AL Central division cellar.

Javier Vazquez will start for the White Sox and he’s finishing up the season strong, having won his last three starts with a 2.11 ERA over that span. He’s also racked up 33 strikeouts in 21 1-3 innings during that stretch while walking only three batters.
Kenny Rogers will start for Detroit and I expect nothing but a pedestrian effort from him tonight. The left-hander has faced the White Sox twice this season, posting a 0-0 record with an 8.00 ERA in nine innings pitched.

Take the White Sox as the home chalk for the win.

Re: Friday Service Picks...

TONY WESTON

Now, this Angels-Athletics game has the makings of one of those trap games. At this point, what do either of these teams have to play for? The A’s have already started looking at next year and the Angels, well, maybe they have something to play for.

Los Angeles/Anaheim is sitting at 92-67 overall this season and is two games behind Boston and Cleveland for best record in the American League. It’s still within their reach and could be exactly enough motivation to fire them up

But still, the Angels will rest some key players and an ace like Dan Haren will take advantage. Don’t expect John Lackey to do much, as he prepares to rest up for the postseason.

It’ll be a cheap win, but a win nonetheless for Oakland.

Re: Friday Service Picks...

Bobby Maxwell

Today we're going with a favorite in Colorado as the Rockies take on the D'Backs in an NL West battle. Spectacular pitching matchup in the opener of this series as both teams are fighting for wins in the NL West race and in the Wildcard standings.

It's Arizona's Brandon Webb (17-10, 3.02 ERA) going up against the Rockies' Jeff Francis (17-8, 4.17). Webb was given an extra day off in Pittsburgh to be able to go in this one.

Colorado has rattled off 11 straight wins to get back in the thick of things in both the division and wildcard races and the Diamondbacks have won 6 of their last 10 to let teams edge close. The Rockies have won four of their last five agaisnt the D'Backs.
Francis is 8-4 at home this season and hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in a home game in his last five outings. he's beaten Arizona the last four times he's seen them dating back to last year and shut them out on five hits over seven innings of a 2-0 win back in May.

Webb hasn't been as strong on the road lately. In his last two on the highway he's given up 10 runs on 14 hits over 14 innings in road starts in San Francisco and San Diego. He's lost three of his last four against the Rockies including in Colorado on May 16 when he allowed five runs on six hits in six innings of a 5-3 loss.

The Rockies hit .298 at home against righties while the D'Backs struggle on the road against southpaws, hitting just .228. Play Colorado in this one as this team is on a mission and playing great baseball.

Sports Gambling Hotline

Yikes, Milwaukee comes back home where they sport the best home mark in the league, and they promptly go out and lose a huge game to the Padres!

The Brewers have dropped 6 of their last 9, and starter Chris Capuano has lost his last 10 decisions - and Milwaukee has lost the last 17 times he has started!!!
It is real hard to feel confidant right now if you are a Milwaukee backer, so we suggest backing the surging Padres who have won their last 3, and are 4-0 in the season series against the Brewers.

True, Greg Maddux has pitched poorly of late, but his team has won 7 of his last 9 starts, and he is a big game pitcher who does wear a World Series championship ring.
Have to give the Padres their props, as they could have folded tent once Cameron and Bradley went down, but the Fathers are staying right in the thick of it with 3 games left!

Play on San Diego.

Re: Friday Service Picks...

Karl Garrett

The G-Man nabbed a winner with the underdog Phillies last night, and tonight I am going to Coors Field and giving you a winner on Colorado over Arizona.

Yeah, the Diamondbacks pushed Brandon Webb back a day so he could open this crucial 3 game set, but why? Webb has stunk this year against the Rockies, as he is 0-3 in his 5 starts against them, and has allowed a massive 23 runs in 32 innings of work!

Colorado is feeling it right now, as they have ripped off 11 in a row, and starter Jeff Francis is more than capable of matching pitches with Webb, as Francis has won his last pair of starts, allowing just 3 runs over 15 innings of work.

Francis is also 1-0 in his 2 starts against the D-Backs, working 13 innings of 2 run ball.

The G-Man is feeling a Colorado win tonight to open this big season finale set.

Take the Rocks to make it 12 straight!

Angels' (R) John Lackey

Los Angeles Angels (92-67) at Oakland Athletics (75-84)
(R) John Lackey (18-9) vs. (R) Dan Haren (15-8)

Los Angeles sends John Lackey (18-9, 3.11 ERA) to the mound. The right-hander is 3-1 with a 2.22 ERA in his past six starts. Lackey is 11-3 with a 2.99 ERA in 22 career starts against the A's, 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA this season.

Oakland counters with Dan Haren (15-8, 3.12), the right-hander ended a personal four-game losing streak Saturday with a 9-3 victory at Cleveland. Haren is 3-5 with a 3.95 ERA in 10 career starts against the Angels, 1-1 with a 1.35 ERA in three starts this season.

The Athletics are 9-7 against the Angels this season and have taken four of six meetings at home.

Oakland has lost four of Haren's last 5 home starts versus the Angels. Meanwhile, the LA Angels have won five of Lackey's last 7 road starts versus the A’s. Take the Angels with John Lackey on the hill in an odds-on pitchers duel. The total has gone ‘under’ in six of the last 8 meetings in Oakland.

Oddsmakers:
Los Angeles as a -120 road favorite with the total listed at 8 'over'.

Vernon Croy

1 Unit, Take the NY Mets Runline -1.5 +100, Solid value here with the Mets who need to win with Oliver Perez (15-9 ERA 3.32) on the mound who has owned Florida this season with an ERA of just 2.89 over 18.2 innings pitched. Perez opponents are hitting just .218 against him when he has pitched at home this season and he is 8-4 at home with an ERA of just 3.20. When the Marlins have lost on the road they have lost by 2 or more runs 6 of their last 7 losses. I look for Perez to pitch deep into this game Friday night so the Mets bullpen will not be a factor here. Have a great Friday! Vernon Croy

Re: Friday Service Picks...

WUNDERDOG

Game: Minnesota at Boston (7:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: Minnesota +184

The Red Sox seem to be teasing with the idea of winning the division, clinching the best record, and just when you think they have it, they slip. They will send Diasuke Matsusaka to the mound tonight to make yet another attempt to put the Yankees away and keep pace with the surging Indians. The Sox are just 5-7 since mid-September and Matsusaka has firmly hit the wall. The Sox have managed just two wins in his last eight starts. Matsusaka has walked 26 in his last 45 innings, and has either lost command as the season has progressed or has become bat shy.

The reason is a 7.09 ERA in those eight starts. Meanwhile Kevin Slowey has become the pitcher the Twins had expected. He took his lumps early, but has really grown and become a confident pitcher on the mound as indicated by his 2.63 September ERA, and his seven-inning one-run, nine strikeout gem his last time out. The clincher has to wait another day as the Twins spoil one at Fenway.

Re: Friday Service Picks...

John Ryan

Florida Marlins vs. New York Mets (MLB)
Sep 28, 2007 7:10 PM EDT

Play: Florida Marlins

Ai Simulator 3* graded play on the Marlins - If it aint broken don’t fix it. Mets machine running on empty and NO wheels whatsoever. Marlins would certainly enjoy taking the “money team” out of the NL playoffs. Mets continue losing this weekend and they could find themselves heading to vacation.

The Mets have so much pressure on them from the NY City media and simple, but powerful embarrassment of losing a 7 game lead with just 17 games left that they can hardly even breath. Supporting this graded play is a system that has gone 98-103 and has made 82.3 units since 1997. Play against all favorites with a money line of -175 to -250 starting a pitcher who gave up <=2 earned runs in his last 2 outings and is now facing an opponent with a cold starting pitcher sporting an ERA >= 7.50 over his last 3 starts. Take the Marlins.

VEGAS EXPERTS

Los Angeles Angels at Oakland Athletics
Friday, September 28th, 10:05 P.M. EDT

Lackey has dominated the A's in his career and shows a 2.99 ERA in 22 starts. Haren has a 2.89 ERA this year in 16 home starts. Both clubs are starting lineups depleted by injuries plus Halos are resting other regulars prior to the playoffs. The LA ANGELS are 34-22 UNDER vs. an AL team with a team batting average of .260 or worse this season while OAKLAND is 70-48 UNDER when playing against a good team (Win Pct. 54% to 62%) over the last 3 seasons.

Play on: Under
