Hornets' Mason out for regular season
Fri, Apr 6, 2007
By Associated Press

OKLAHOMA CITY -- New Orleans Hornets forward Desmond Mason will need surgery for his broken nose and will miss the rest of the regular season.

If the Hornets make the playoffs, Mason could return, general manager Jeff Bower said. Going into Friday night's home game against Phoenix in Oklahoma City, the Hornets trailed the Los Angeles Clippers by 2 1/2 games for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

The Hornets travel to Minnesota Saturday night.

''Our focus continues to be making the playoffs,'' Bower said. ''If we accomplish that goal, we are hopeful that he would be able to rejoin us and provide us with the same leadership and tenacity that made him such a valuable part of our team this season.''

Mason has averaged 13.7 points and 4.6 rebounds while starting all 75 of the team's games this season.

He took an inadvertent elbow to the face from Seattle's Chris Wilcox during a 102-93 overtime victory Wednesday night. The blow fractured Mason's cheek and nose.

The Hornets said Thursday the cheek would not require surgery, but doctors were unsure about the nose. On Friday, the team said surgery was necessary to repair his deviated septum.

Clippers waive Rebraca; sign Conroy
Fri, Apr 6, 2007
By Associated Press

LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Clippers waived center Zeljko Rebraca on Friday and signed guard Will Conroy.

Conroy, who has been playing for the Tulsa 66ers of the NBA Development League, joins the Clippers for the second time this season. He appeared in 42 games for the 66ers, averaging 15.0 points, 10.6 assists and 5.1 rebounds.

Rebraca has been sidelined all season with a back injury. He underwent surgery in January to remove herniated disc fragments.

He also has played with Detroit and Atlanta over his five-year NBA career. During his two seasons with the Clippers, Rebraca averaged 5.6 points and 2.9 rebounds in a total of 87 appearances.

Rebraca signed with Los Angeles as a free agent in 2004.

SCOREBOARD
Saturday, April 7

Denver at L.A. Clippers (10:30 p.m. EDT)

The Clippers have won seven of eight and are hanging on to a playoff spot.

STARS Friday

-Kobe Bryant, Lakers, scored 46 points and Los Angeles beat Seattle 112-109.

-Danny Granger, Pacers, scored a career-high 32 points to lead Indiana's 112-102 win over Charlotte.

-Baron Davis, Warriors, had 31 points and nine assists to lead Golden State to a 116-104 victory over Memphis.

UGLY

Dallas shot just 36 percent in Friday night's 75-71 loss to Denver. Dirk Nowitzki, who finished with 22 points, was 9-of-23 from the floor and Jason Terry was 6-of-20 for 13 points for the Mavericks. The Nuggets were even worse, shooting 35.5 percent. Allen Iverson was 9-for-23 for 22 points, and Carmelo Anthony was 7-for-21 for 23 points.

UNSTOPPA-BULLS

Chicago beat New Jersey 105-74 Friday night for its seventh win in eight games and moved within 2 1/2 games of Detroit for first-place in the Central Division and Eastern Conference. Chicago holds the tiebreaker over Cleveland and both are 46-31.

DOUBLE TROUBLE

Brandon Roy and Jarrett Jack combined for 47 points to lead Portland over Houston 85-78 Friday night. Roy, a rookie, scored 24 points and the second-year Jack had 23 for the Trail Blazers, who were missing star Zach Randolph.

KEEPING PACE

Indiana kept its playoff hopes alive by beating Charlotte 112-102 Friday night and drawing within a game of idle Orlando for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

SO CLOSE

Dallas lost its chance of joining the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls as the only teams in NBA history to win 70 games, after Friday night's 75-71 loss to Denver. The best the Mavericks (62-13) can do is 69 wins.

SPEAKING

''We have a tape that we can show them that they can be a great defensive team. We play defense and we're going to find answers offensively. I've said that since the day we made the (Allen Iverson) trade. I think we're a dangerous basketball team.'' - Denver coach George Karl after Denver's 75-71 win over Dallas on Friday night. The Nuggets held the Mavericks to just 36 percent shooting.

Sonics G Ridnour carried off court after injuring left ankle
Sat, Apr 7, 2007
By Associated Press

SEATTLE -- Seattle point guard Luke Ridnour injured his left ankle late in the first quarter Friday night against the Los Angeles Lakers and had to be carried off the court.

With the shot clock winding down, Ridnour drove the lane on Luke Walton, flipped up a left-handed scoop that missed and came down on Walton's right foot, severely rolling his left ankle.

Ridnour immediately fell to the floor, rolling around on the baseline and grabbing at his ankle. After a couple of minutes, he was carried off by teammate Mike Wilks and trainer Mike Shimensky. Ridnour was taken for X-rays, but results weren't immediately available.

Seattle All-Star Ray Allen is already out for the season with bone spurs in his left ankle. Allen is schedule to have surgery Saturday. Rashard Lewis also missed 22 games in the middle of the season with a right hand injury.

Ridnour is averaging 11.1 points and 5.2 assists this season.

Marbury leaves with injured toe, return questionable
Fri, Apr 6, 2007
By Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Guard Stephon Marbury left New York's game against Minnesota in the first half Friday night with an injured toe, the latest blow for the short-handed Knicks.

Marbury came out of the game early in the second quarter and the Knicks said he was questionable to return because of right turf toe. The point guard didn't even take the court for second-half warmups, though he did grab a seat on the bench as the third quarter began.

The Knicks were barely hanging on in the Eastern Conference playoff race while playing without Jamal Crawford and Steve Francis, out with ankle injuries, and Quentin Richardson (back surgery). Sixth man David Lee returned Friday night after missing nearly the entire second half of the season with a right leg injury.

Marbury has been the Knicks' best player during that span, averaging 23.1 points in March before scoring 30 in a loss to Philadelphia on Wednesday night. He has missed only one game this season despite battling knee and toe injuries.

Re: Basketball News and Notes April 7

Roy out against Dallas

Trail Blazers rookie Brandon Roy will be held out of Saturday night's game at Dallas because of pain in his right knee.

Roy spent a great deal of Friday's pregame in Houston in the training room, receiving electronic therapy in addition to being checked out by athletic trainer Jay Jensen and a Houston doctor. Roy went on to score a game-high 24 points while playing 37 minutes. He rubbed the knee a lot after the game, but never mentioned that it was bothering him.

Team officials said it doesn't appear that this will be a chronic injury, or one that will keep Roy out for an extended period. It has more to do with being cautious, especially considering tonight is the second game of a back-to-back. He is expected to return for Monday's game in San Antonio.

This will be the 22nd game Roy has missed this season. The Blazers are 8-13 in those games.

Incidentally, with the win last night in Houston, the Blazers are now 6-1 this season playing without Zach Randolph.

No news who will replace Roy in the starting lineup, but I think the best bet is Martell Webster. The Blazers will have only 10 healthy players available.
