Hockey Today - April 3
Tue, Apr 3, 2007
By Associated Press

SCOREBOARD
Tuesday, April 3

Colorado at Calgary (9 p.m. EDT). The Flames can clinch a playoff spot by beating the surging Avalanche. Oddsmakers have listed Calgary as -162 favorites and the total is set at 5 1/2 goals.

STARS Monday

-Glen Metropolit and Doug Weight, Blues, scored in a 17-second span in the second period to help St. Louis beat Dallas 4-2.

SUDDENLY SACKED

Claude Julien was fired as coach of the first-place New Jersey Devils on Monday and replaced by general manager Lou Lamoriello with less than a week to go in the regular season. It marks the second straight season Lamoriello has taken over behind the bench. Last year, he replaced Larry Robinson in December. Julien posted a 47-24-8 mark in his first season in New Jersey, which has won four of its last five games.

PUSHING BACK

St. Louis won three of the four meetings with Dallas this season after Monday night's 4-2 victory. The Blues are 12-9-4 in their past 25 games against teams headed to the playoffs.

SNAPPED

Dallas' four-game winning streak ended with a 4-2 loss to St. Louis on Monday night.

SPEAKING

''Nothing makes it any easier, believe me. The day anything like this becomes easy, or when it's trading a player or when you have to make these decisions and it becomes easy, that's the day you look for a different position.'' New Jersey general manager Lou Lamoriello, who fired coach Claude Julien on Monday. It's the second time Lamoriello's made a late-season coaching move; he fired Robbie Ftorek with eight games left in the 1999-2000 season, and Larry Robinson led the team to its second Stanley Cup title.

Columbus shuffles players
Tue, Apr 3, 2007
By Associated Press

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Columbus Blue Jackets added defenseman Derrick Walser and goaltender Tomas Popperle on Tuesday on emergency recall from their American Hockey League affiliate in Syracuse.

The team also assigned goaltender Dan LaCosta to the Crunch.

The Blue Jackets have been hit hard with injuries heading into their final week of the season, losing defenseman Ole-Kristian Tollefsen to a hip pointer on Sunday.

Walser appeared in six games with Columbus this season, scoring two goals. He has eight goals and 21 assists in 88 NHL games. He was acquired in a trade with Carolina on Nov. 29.

Popperle made his NHL debut on Feb. 2 at Calgary, stopping seven of eight shots in relief of Ty Conklin. He has a 24-17-4 record with a 2.85 goals-against average for Syracuse.
