Velasquez vs. dos Santos Pick
Velasquez (9-0) enters the fight with the strap and will defend against the challenger, dos Santos (13-1). The fight will take place from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California and air live on FOX at 9PM ET.
According to oddsmakers, Velasquez is the favorite to retain his championship, as he has odds of -190 to win Saturday’s five-round contest. Dos Santos comes into the contest with a money line of +155 to defeat Velasquez and win the championship.
WHY PICK VELASQUEZ
The champion is the champion for a reason. He has a tremendous wrestling base and was able to takedown the likes of Brock Lesnar, so dos Santos shouldn’t be able to stop him. Velasquez has also developed some strong boxing skills and has a big hook that has dropped a number of top fighters. Velasquez has arguably faced tougher competition than dos Santos in his UFC career as well and will have the support of a latin-based crowd at the Honda Center.
WHY PICK DOS SANTOS
Junior dos Santos has torn through opponents in his seven UFC bouts and he is arguably the top striker in the division. His uppercut has led to a number of key victories and he also is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under the Nogueira brothers. Junior is the fresher fighter here as well, as Velasquez hasn’t competed in over a year due to rotator cuff surgery. JDS should have the striking edge if he fights with his ability, and that is where the fight has to start each round.
WHO TO PICK?
Today’s MMA seems to be reverting back to a wrestling style and it shows in a number of the champions like Velasquez and Georges St. Pierre. Velasquez has explosive wrestling and takedowns that should be able give the lighter dos Santos fits. Cain is pretty formidable in his striking as well, so I don’t see him be overwhelmed on his feet. I see this fight being a grind and as long as Velasquez doesn’t tire, I think he will win a decision.
