The main event was originally scheduled to be Nate Marquardt facing Rick Story in a welterweight bout. However, Marquardt failed a pre-fight medical exam and will be unable to compete. Still, I have picks for three of the fights on tonight’s main card. Odds for each contest are according to oddsmakers from online sportsbook Bodog. Here are three picks to consider for tonight’s action.
UFC Heavyweight Bout – Pat Barry (6-2) vs. Cheick Kongo (15-6-2)
This heavyweight contest features a great technical striker in Barry and an experienced veteran in Kongo, who can strike and grapple. Due to not being as strong of a striker as Barry, I see Kongo pushing this fight to the cage where he can put his weight on Barry and tire him. I also expect Kongo to mix in some takedowns and earn himself a decision victory. FREE PICK – Cheick Kongo -200
UFC Welteweight Bout – John Howard (14-6) vs. Matt Brown (13-10)
Howard is favored, but I think this is a bad matchup stylistically for him. Brown has done very well against opponents that are predominantly strikers. Howard has struggled against guys that can beat him to the punch and take him down. Brown can do both of those things, so I see an upset here with Brown winning by submission in the third round. FREE PICK – Matt Brown +190
UFC Heavyweight Bout – Matt Mitrione (4-0) vs. Christian Morecraft (7-1)
Mitrione is a rising star in the UFC and I think this is another bout to help him climb up the ladder a little more. He should be able to control the fight with his unorthodox striking. I don’t see Morecraft having the strength to really throw Mitrione around, which means the fight will stay standing, where Mitrione has the clear edge. Look for Mitrione to win by decision. FREE PICK – Matt Mitrione -280
