BATON ROUGE, LA (The Spread) – LSU head coach Les Miles announced today that junior cornerback Tyrann Mathieu has been kicked off the team.
Said Miles, Mathieu is “no longer on the team” and added” we’ll miss him, but we have to go on.” Miles continued to say that the decision is “permanent” and “he will not be back” to the team.
There are rumors that Mathieu failed another drug test, which would be his third in three seasons. But that’s just speculation – there are no concrete details on why Mathieu was booted from the team.

What’s interesting is that LSU’s title odds haven’t changed since the announcement. The Tigers started the day with 5/1 odds to win the 2013 BCS Championship and that’s where their odds currently sit. The USC Trojans remain 3/1 favorites to win this year’s national title.
Mathieu was a Consensus All-American in 2011 and was first-team All-SEC last year as well. He was named 2011 SEC Defensive Player of the Year, the 2011 Cotton Bowl Defensive MVP, and won the Chuck Bednarik Award last season as well. Suffice it to say, LSU just lost a huge piece of its defense.
