CINCINNATI, OH (The Spread) – USA Today’s Bob Nightengale tweets that the Reds don’t plan on packaging Johnny Cueto and Aroldis Chapman in any deal at the deadline.
According to Nightengale, the Reds would prefer to do separate deals for Cueto and Chapman if they do decide to move both players by the end of the month. There had been speculation that Cincinnati could package both players in one trade.
Chapman still has one season of team control remaining so it makes sense that the Reds might not be as motivated to move him as they are Cueto and/or fellow starter Mike Leake. That said, Chapman is due a raise in arbitration this winter so if the Reds do plan on moving him at some point, he seemingly has more value at the trade deadline than he does in the offseason.
It should be yet another interesting trade deadline.
