LAS VEGAS, NV (The Spread) – The Toronto Blue Jays have been one of the best surprises of the 2014 MLB season and they’re currently favored to win the AL East Division.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book BetDSI, the Blue Jays are currently 5/7 to win the American League East. The Yankees have the next-best odds at 7/2, while the Orioles are 4/1, the Red Sox are 13/2 and the Rays are a massive underdog at 25/1.
Toronto currently leads Baltimore by 5.5 games, New York by 6.5 games, Boston by 10 games and Tampa Bay by a whopping 15 games. The Jays (39-26) also have the second-best winning percentage in baseball, behind only the A’s, who are currently 39-25 on the year. At 19-11, the Jays have the best road record behind only, once again, Oakland, which is 22-13 away from the Coliseum this season.
The Jays are lead by one of the best offenses in baseball. They’re currently second in runs scored, fifth in batting average, fourth in on base percentage and second in slugging. Jose Bautista is ripping the cover off the ball with a .309 average, while Edwin Encarnacion has 20 home runs and 53 RBI. Mark Buehrle has also put together an outstanding season at age35, as he’s 10-2 with a 2.04 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP.
The Rays have easily been the biggest disappointment in all of baseball, nevertheless the AL East. Many pundits believed that Tampa Bay would win the division and challenge for the pennant. Instead, the injury bug has hit hard, which has left the offense rudderless. At some point, the Rays are also likely to trade David Price, leaving them with even less talent.
