The last time a contender came close to winning the Triple Crown was back in 2008 when Big Brown "DNF" in the Belmont. Smarty Jones also finished second to Birdstone in the Belmont in 2004 while Funny Cide finished third in 2003. War Emblem won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes in 2002 before finishing a disappointing eighth at the Belmont.

I'll Have Another surprised at this year's Kentucky Derby when he won at Churchill Downs as a 12/1 long shot. Bodemeister finished second with 4/1 odds, while Dullahan finished third at 8/1. The favorite, Union Rags, finished seventh with 9/2 odds.
